The Top 5 New Game Releases We Recommend

The Game: Super Mario Bros. 35

Release Date: October 1, 2020

Platforms: Switch

Why It’s Exciting: Super Mario Bros. 35 was created to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros.game. It’s Nintendo’s take on a Super Mario-style battle royale that casts you as one of 35 Marios playing against online opponents throughout the 2D levels of the classic game. You can even make other people’s courses more challenging by defeating enemies! This game is available on the Nintendo Switch eShop and is free for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. But hurry – this special edition Super Mario Bros. game is only available to play until March 31, 2021.

The Game: Star Wars: Squadrons

Release Date: October 2, 2020

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, PC

Why It’s Exciting: If you’ve ever watched Star Wars and wished you could pilot an X-wing just like Luke Skywalker, this is the game for you. Early reviews of the single-player campaign on this space combat simulator have been very positive, with players reporting exciting locales and plenty of familiar faces. The precise flight mechanics and attention to detail make this an authentic, highly engaging Star Wars dogfighting experience. The game also includes competitive multiplayer modes and VR support if you want to make your space battle that much more realistic. Our opinion? Lock your S-foils in attack position and enjoy the ride with Star Wars: Squadrons.

The Game: Amnesia: Rebirth

Release Date: October 20, 2020

Platforms: PS4, PC

Why It’s Exciting: A new horror video game releasing just in time for Halloween? What’s not to love? In this sequel to the highly popular Amnesia: The Dark Descent, players explore the Algerian desert as protagonist Tasi Trianon. Previews reveal a broken-down tank and a corpse-laden indoor setting, amongst other creepy locales. To make matters more difficult – and frightening – Tasi has a mysterious disease where the more afraid she becomes, the worse her symptoms get. The player’s ability to light matches in dark areas also plays a big role in the spookiness, as you have to constantly decide if it’s worth using one of your precious matches as you move through dark and dangerous areas in the game. If you’re looking for a new horror game to play this Halloween, we say give this one a try!

The Game: Ghostrunner

Release Date: October 27, 2020

Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Why It’s Exciting: Ghostrunner delivers as a solid cyberpunk game with plenty of slick action and super-fast gameplay. The setting is typical for cyberpunk games – think rain-slick surfaces and dark, dirty alleys. But Ghostrunner also includes a bright and visually stunning VR world. It’s an unexpected addition and the game is all the more enthralling for it. Here, the Ghostrunner learns more about his abilities, including a push-style attack called the Tempest. It’s pretty cool. If you’re a fan of slick, speedy action coupled with high stakes and a cyberpunk aesthetic, this is the perfect game for you!

The Game: Pikmin 3 Deluxe

Release Date: October 30, 2020

Platforms: Switch

Why It’s Exciting: This is an updated version of the game that originally came out on the Nintendo Wii U in 2013. The original game was well-loved by players and critics for its gameplay and graphics. Pikmin 3 Deluxe offers the same level of quality but with added bonuses such as new difficulty options, lock-on targeting, and optional hints for when you’re stuck. There are also new side-story missions involving Olimar and Louie, and the newest version even lets you play with a friend. If you loved Pikmin 3 for the Wii U, or if you’re simply looking for a more laid-back game than some of the others on this list, we think you’ll love Pikmin 3 Deluxe!

These are just a few of upcoming video games that we’re particularly excited about. But if none of our recommendations grabbed your attention, don’t worry – there are plenty more new game releases happening this month! Check out the full list of new video games launching throughout October 2020 right here, and maybe grab yourself a title or two to get you through until the new consoles release in November.
